PERTH - Croatian-born Western Australian Minister for Education and Training, Ljiljanna Ravlich, met with a representative from Croatia's University of Zagreb last week to discuss how Western Australia and Croatia could work closely together in delivering tertiary education. Vice Rector for International Relations, Professor Vlasta Vizek-Vidovic,
visited WA as part of Education and Training International's ''Croatia Country Strategy'', to strengthen ties between the University of Zagreb and the Western Australian university sector.Education in Croatia is undergoing reform and a joint-association would enable Croatia to benefit from Western Australia's highly regarded expertise in education and training as it moves towards membership of the European Union. Ravlich said a relationship with Croatia would allow Western Australia to promote its knowledge and skills to Central and Eastern Europe and reinforce its reputation as a leading provider of education and training on a global scale. "The Vice Rector and I have agreed to develop a memorandum of understanding between the University of Zagreb and the WA Department of Education and Training, "Ravlich said. "This will provide an avenue for Western Australia to assist Croatia as it undergoes education reform and for us to engage in joint research projects and other education related opportunities." Other matters discussed at the meeting included Western Australia's school curriculum and assessment strategies, at-risk student strategies and teacher training initiatives. The Minister and Professor Vizek-Vidovic also agreed to explore a memorandum of understanding between the WA Department of Education and Training and the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports. This would cement a broader and long lasting relationship between Western Australia and Croatia. Through Education and Training International, the WA Department of Education and Training has lodged an expression of interest in the $US85 million World Bank Croatia Education Sector Support Program (ESSP).
Western Australian involvement in the World Bank Program would formalise the commitments made by the Minister and Vice Rector.
